Considering CBD for your pet? Here's what you need to ask your vet.
When it comes to information on CBD, the internet is not short of search results but it can be hard to wade through all of the content and figure out what guidance you should be listening to, and what is misinformation. As opposed to asking Google, your veterinarian is your best source of information.
Here’s a list of questions to ask your vet if you’re interested in CBD for your pet.
Can CBD oil be used to treat my pet’s conditions?
CBD is not a therapy for every health disorder. Currently, veterinarians may recommend CBD to treat anxiety and mood disorders, epilepsy, chronic pain, osteoarthritis and skin conditions. Vets may also recommend CBD oil as part of a palliative care plan.
Do you have experience in giving pets CBD?
Not every vet has experience in administering CBD as a treatment. Here at CBD Vets Australia, we can connect you to our network of veterinarians who can prescribe CBD oil to your pet and provide the necessary guidance and monitoring.
How much CBD oil should I give to my pet?
Dosages will vary based on your pet’s size and the nature of their symptoms. A CBD-qualified vet will be able to give detailed instructions on how to administer the CBD, the size of the dose, and the frequency of the dose.
Can I give my pet CBD Indefinitely?
Broadly speaking, we know that CBD can be taken over a long period of time. However, your vet may decide to initiate treatment for a particular time window. Make sure that you ask whether this is a long-term or short-term plan for your pet’s management.
What do I need to monitor for when my pet starts on CBD?
CBD is generally well tolerated in mammals, as they have an endocannabinoid system that knows exactly what to do with CBD compounds.
However, every animal is different, and there’s always a low risk of a pet not responding well to CBD. When your vet prescribes CBD to your pet, they will list certain signs to look out for which may indicate an adverse reaction to the treatment.
How do I tell if the CBD is working?
If you’re giving your pet CBD for a targeted issue, you’ll want to know the signs to look for that indicate that it’s accomplishing what you want.
Your vet should be able to give you a list of signs that the CBD is working. Also, you can ask your vet whether or not you should adjust the dosage level in case the CBD is not seemingly providing the desired effects, and how you should go about that.
It is considered okay to increase a dose of a CBD product, but it must be done in small increments over time.
